Julio Licinio, the renowned psychiatrist and the professor of Psychiatry Department of State University of New York Upstate Medical University of Syracuse in New York recently discussed in a recently held seminar the struggle parents face to identify Autism. As the parent, the best thing you can do for your baby is to identify any sign of autism as earliest possible to start the required therapy.

What is Autism?

Autism Spectrum Disorder or ASD is a developmental disorder which affects the way people behave, communicate or interact with other people. In most of the cases, the children show the sign of ASD when they are only a few months old. Other people show no symptoms in their early age but it starts after few years. Mr. Julio Licinio expressed that most of the parents identify the problem when their kids become 2 years old.

What are the signs by which parents can identify autism?


Unfortunately, there is no medicine for autism till now you can only try different types of therapies to cope up the child with its surroundings. The early signs of autism vary among children.

Up to one year of age, the following symptoms can be a sign of Autism:

Avoiding eye contact
Lack of smiles
Not sharing any sound or facial expression
Very less or no babbling
Not interested in gestures like showing, pointing, reaching or weaving
No response to name

Up to two years of age, the following symptoms can be a sign of Autism:

Few or no words
Few or no meaningful two words phrase

Signs of Autism at any age:

Avoiding eye contact
Lack of speech
Lack of social skills
Prefer solitude
Having a problem to understand the feeling of others
Repetition of one word or phrase
Delay in language development
Lack of interest
Repetition of one behavior
Unusual reaction to any sound, taste, smell or light
