A New Focus On The Relation Between Obesity and Depression By Dr. Julio Licinio

There is an invisible link between depression and obesity which was overlooked for a long time. Dr. Julio Licinio recently made an interesting revelation of how obesity and depression are co-related and complement each other in a negative way. This Senior Vice President of Academic and Health Affairs, as well as the professor of Psychiatry, Pharmacology and Medicine at State University of New York Upstate Medical University, is researching on the weight and mental health connection for years. The main area of focus is whether depression triggers obesity or obesity causes depression.

According to Julio Licinio, "Both the depression and obesity share the common risk factors which can trigger these two conditions. Two main reasons are belonging to lower socioeconomic classes and unwilling to participate in the physical activities to develop either or both of the condition."

He has made a study to treat both the condition in a singular way to get the overall good result. He recommends bariatric surgery for the people who are failed to shed those extra kilos in order to treat depression. It has been shown that 77% of people have gotten a positive result after the loosing of excess body weight.

Dr. Julio Licinio suggested that the anti-depression tablets are also responsible for the overweight. It is the common side effects of the tablets which are visible to 97% people undergoing depression treatment.

Diet is a common solution for those who want to avoid surgery. He said a proper diet plan with lots of fresh and green vegetables and rich in fiber can help the patient to meet both the goal simultaneously. Sometimes, it can be hard for the person who is already dealing with mental health. Along with that depression comes with the habit of overeating. He suggested storing healthy and nutritious foods instead of the packets of junk.

Exercise should be introduced to the daily routine of the affected person. It will give a positive vibe to the mind and add flexibility to the joint. At the same time, free hand exercises and jogging can help in weight loss plan too.
